Description
The Tecsun Outdoor MW/SW Antenna significantly enhances reception of signals in the medium wave (AM) and shortwave antenna bands coving 0.5-30 Mhz. The Tecsun antenna is based on a longwire antenna design but provides significantly improved reception because it utilises a matching transformer that acts as a unun (unbalanced to unbalanced) with a ratio of 10:1. This provides an optimal match between the 500 Ω antenna and the 50Ω input impedance of the external antenna input of many portable radios, greatly increasing the amount of signal provided to the receiver.
The antenna’s coax feeder is 10 metres long, and acts as a counterpoise for the antenna, therefore no connection to ground is necessary. However, the stainless steel eyelet which is connected to the balun is internally grounded, if reception is noisy this can be grounded to an external earth to form an external counterpoise.
The RG174 50 ohm coaxial cable is terminated in an SMA or BNC male plug depending on availability. We include a BNC to 3.5mm mono plug and BNC female to PL-259 adaptor that suits most portable shortwave receivers, including the following Tecsun models: PL310ET, PL-330, PL-365, PL-368, PL600, PL660/680, PL-990x, H501x and S-2000. Note the S-2200, PL-990x, H-501x, PL-330 and PL-365/368 are the only Tecsun portables with a MW external antenna connection. For these models this antenna can be used to improve MW reception.
The antenna is directional, maximum signal pickup occurs 90 degrees from the direction in which the antenna is run. This antenna can be used indoors or outdoors and is completely waterproof. The 10 metre coaxial cable feed can be disconnected from the antenna and longer, lower loss cable substituted of desired. Similarly, the antenna cable can be lengthened for additional performance.
